Weekly Digest: Specter greeted with cheers, jeers
Here is a look at the top stories of local interest published in The Indiana Gazette during the week of Aug. 9-15.
SUNDAY, AUG. 9
Seeds of Faith Christian Academy has welcomed a new principal to lead the school, located in a wing of Graystone Presbyterian Church. Stan Kesler, of Three Rivers, Mich., was selected to replace Paula Detar, who had served as principal since the school's inception in 2007. Kesler was a pastor at independent Bible churches for 31 years, has taught at two Christian schools and helped found Cornerstone Christian School in Radcliffe, Iowa.
School officials say enrollment has more than doubled since the 2007-08 school year, and 120 students are expected this year.
MONDAY, AUG. 10
Pennsylvania officials began notifying more than 250 state employees that they are losing their jobs, as the budget stalemate in Harrisburg continued. The layoffs are fallout from a multibillion-dollar deficit that has prevented passage of a complete budget more than six weeks into the new fiscal year. In the meantime, the state government is running on a bare-bones budget approved last week that excludes funds for many social services, public schools and other vital programs.
TUESDAY, AUG. 11
A population boom of sorts this coming school year has pushed the expected enrollment at the Indiana Area School District's four elementary schools up by 69 students over the figures of June 1, according to figures presented at a school board meeting Monday night. The biggest increases since June 1 are shown at East Pike Elementary School, up 38 students, and at Ben Franklin Elementary School, up 26 students.
District Superintendent Deborah Clawson cautioned the board that the district might need to hire one more elementary teacher if the average class sizes are projected to be too unwieldy. The board Monday voted to fill three vacant elementary-school teaching positions.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 12
John H. Anderson, 82, of Apollo, died of injuires suffered in vehicle collision Tuesday on Route 22 in West Wheatfield Township, according to state police. Police said Anderson was traveling east and his pickup truck crossed the centerline of the highway and hit an oncoming truck and trailer driven by a Wyoming County man.

The United School District board approved hiring Dr. David G. Blozowich as superintendent at a salary of $102,580, effective Oct. 12. Blozowich, of Latrobe, will be leaving Laurel Valley Middle/High School, where he has served as principal for two years.
Blozowich beat out 13 other applicants to become the replacement for Dr. Kathy Myers Wunder, who announced her retirement in May.
THURSDAY, AUG. 13
The community mourned the passing of Blairsville Mayor John Zedick, who died on Wednesday at age 80. Zedick, who served as mayor for eight years, was active in youth sports and was a member of numerous community groups. He taught for 35 years in the Indiana Area School District, retiring in 1992.
FRIDAY, AUG. 14
Sen. Arlen Specter met with opposition and support from constituents during a quick stop in Indiana County on Thursday, prior to a scheduled town hall meeting on health care in Kittanning later in the day. A small group of protesters and counter-protesters stood outside the Rustic Lodge in White Township to greet Specter, who met with a group composed mainly of Democrats inside the banquet hall.
SATURDAY, AUG. 15
Edward Parks III, 26, an Indiana native, will see a lifelong dream come true when he debuts at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City on Oct. 3. He will perform the role of Fiorello in Gioachino Rossini's opera ``The Barber of Seville.'' Parks, who now lives in New York City, attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, where he sang for famous mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. He earned his Master of Music degree from Yale University in 2008.
