There were 20 Kiwanians in attendance at the weekly breakfast meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Indiana April 9 at Eat’n Park. Indiana University of Pennsylvania professor George Beiger introduced Tedwell Edwards, a doctoral candidate at IUP. He was a Key Club member while he lived in Jamaica. George Beil discussed the possibility of a fundraiser with Treasure Hunters of Indiana which the Kiwanis Club could use at their trivia night.

Terry Shaffer, who was secretary of the Blairsville Kiwanis Club, which recently turned in its charter, thanked the Indiana club for assuming Blairsville’s student of the month activities and two scholarships.

Fred Yun, secretary, congratulated Bonni Dunlap on the successful 23rd annual leadership workshop. Close to 100 Indiana County sophomores attended and were introduced to many new ideas on leadership. The workshop included Kiwanis members, Circle K members and Indiana High School Key Club members.

At the morning meeting, members signed up to attend the IUP Circle K end-of-the-year dinner on April 19 at the IUP College Lodge. Horace Mann K-Kids members will operate the Kiwanis lemonade stand at the ARC Safety Day at the Indiana Mall. Yun stressed to the members present the importance of continuing to sign up trivia teams, get financial donations, and baskets and gifts for Trivia Night, to be to be held April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Rustic Lodge.

Carole Reed, director of Family Promise, spoke to the Kiwanians concerning the success of the Family Promise program. The program began in December of 2011 and has continued to grow in recent years.

The Family Promise provides meals, lodging and case management to homeless families in Indiana County.

She thanked Kiwanis, the IUP Circle K and the Indiana High School Key Club for their help getting the program established. It is estimated there are more than 400 homeless families in the area who need the services of the group. Area churches are also vital to the success of the program as they provide housing and meals for those in need.
