Scholarship established

A scholarship established in memory of an Indiana University of Pennsylvania alumna will benefit future student teachers at IUP for years to come.

A gift from Warren K. Martin, of Honey Brook, Pa., made in memory of his wife, Eileen, creates the fund from which a scholarship will be awarded. Awards will be made annually to a married female student who is on the cusp of completing her education with a student teaching experience.

Eileen Martin, a 1963 IUP graduate, earned her teaching degree as a married mother of four children and went on to become an elementary teacher in the Apollo-Ridge School District in Armstrong County. Warren Martin served for many years as a minister at the Apollo United Presbyterian Church and the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver.

“Many married women who return to school usually do so to improve their family’s situation, and balancing full-time academic work while managing their family’s needs can be a financial struggle,” Dr. Edward Nardi, associate dean of the College of Education and Educational Technology, said.
