Students place at history competition

Several Indiana County students placed at the 2013 National History Day regional competition held at IUP last month.

Close to 200 students from six counties displayed their research, including historical papers, documentaries, websites and performances, to be judged by faculty members and students at IUP.

The local winners were:

Homer-Center

First place, group performance, junior division: “A Revolutionary Journey,” by Sarah Bard and Mya Zemlock

Indiana Area Junior High School

First place, group website, junior division, “The Start of Christianity in the Roman Empire,” by Alex Detwiler and Joel Moore

Second place, paper, junior division, “Helen Keller,” by Madison Barker

Second place, individual exhibit, junior division, “My Right to Vote,” by Isabelle McCabe

Second place, group performance, junior division, “Walk on the Moon,” by Katie Hagen and Liliana Simone

Second place, group documentary, junior division, “The Berlin Wall,” by Katie Conrad and Katharina Lippert

Marion Center

First place, individual performance, senior division, “Talkies,” by Julia Snickles

Third place, group performance, junior division, “The Orphan Train,” by Bailey Cribbs, Allison Fleming, Kara Kutsch, Michaela Lydic

Third place, group exhibit, senior division, “Russia’s Rebirth,” by Jakeb Rising, Reed Hertzler, Adam Whit, Nathan Tyger

First place, individual exhibit, senior division, “The Enlightenment’s Influence on Our Independence,” by Cara Edwards

Third place, individual exhibit, junior division, “The Magna Carta,” by Kayla Mikesell

Five local Indiana University of Pennsylvania students served as volunteers for the event:

  • Alyssa Altman, of Shelocta, an English education major at IUP. She is the daughter of James and Carol Altman and a 2010 graduate of West Shamokin High School. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the History Club at IUP.
  • Christine Bryner, of Black Lick, a finance major at IUP. She is the daughter of Robert Fisher and Phyllis Bryner and a 2012 graduate of Blairsville High School.
  • Jessica Henry, of Homer City, a family and consumer science education major at IUP. She is the daughter of William and Marsha Henry and a 2010 graduate of Homer-Center High School. She is a Provost Scholar, dean’s list student, and member of the Family and Consumer Science Club.
  • Megan McCully, of Smicksburg, a social studies education major at IUP. She is the daughter of Kerry and Hope McCully and a 2010 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. She is a Provost Scholar, dean’s list student, and a member of the Future Social Studies Educators Association.
  • Cody Wells, of Smicksburg, a social studies education major at IUP. He is the son of Dick Wells and Stacy Condron and a 2010 graduate of West Shamokin High School. He is a Provost Scholar, a dean’s list student, and a member of the History Club and History Honor Society at IUP.

More than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide, participated in the National History Day contest. Students chose historical topics related to the theme “Turning Points in History” and conducted research using primary and secondary sources.
