Students place in poster competition

LORETTO — Several local students placed in the recent 2013 Pennsylvania Statistics Competition hosted by Saint Francis University in Loretto.

A total of 524 posters from across Pennsylvania were judged and included 67 posters from grades kindergarten through third grade, 200 from grades fourth through sixth, 185 from grades seventh through ninth, and 72 from grades 10th through 12th.

  • Austin Deyarmin, from Blairsville, earned fourth place for his poster “Fantastic Freezing Facts” in the K-3 grade level. Karen Kunkle is the teacher.
  • Brooke Shirley, from Saltsburg, received honorable mention for “Don’t Judge a Book by Its Award” in the fourth- through sixth-grade level. Teacher: Stephanie Jake.
  • Anthony Aronson, Saltsburg, honorable mention for “Restaurant Rumble” in the fourth- through sixth-grade level. Teacher: Stephanie Jake.
  • Gino Bartolini, Saltsburg, honorable mention for “Restaurant Rumble” in the fourth- through sixth-grade level. Teacher: Stephanie Jake.
  • Michael Shirley, Saltsburg, honorable mention for “Restaurant Rumble” in the fourth- through sixth-grade level. Teacher: Stephanie Jake.
  • Amy Kukula, Blairsville, honorable mention for “Gas Prices ...” in the fourth- through sixth-grade level. Teacher: Karen Kunkle.
  • Lexi Humphrey, Saltsburg, third place for “Can’t Beat the Beat” in the seventh- through ninth-grade level. Teacher: Stephanie Jake.
  • Anna Overman, Homer City, honorable mention for “Does Playing an Out of School Instrument Improve Your Math Grade and GPA?” in the seventh- through ninth-grade level. Teacher: Matt Rodkey.
  • Morgan Buggey, Homer City, honorable mention for “Does the Amount of Sleep a Student Receives Affect Their GPA?” in the seventh- through ninth-grade level. Teacher: Matt Rodkey.
  • Madison Mohney, Indiana, honorable mention for the poster “SAT vs. ACT” in the 10th- through 12th-grade level. Teacher: Mark Zilinskas.
  • Kelly Green, Indiana, honorable mention for “SAT vs. ACT” in the 10th- through 12th-grade level. Teacher: Mark Zilinskas.
  • Ruvini Navaratna, Indiana, honorable mention for “Going for Gold — Australia vs. Kazakhstan” in the 10th- through 12th-grade level. Teacher: Mark Zilinskas.
  • Paul Birch, Indiana, honorable mention for “Going for Gold — Australia vs. Kazakhstan” in the 10th- through 12th-grade level. Teacher: Mark Zilinskas.

The annual, statewide competition is in its 17th year.

Students who submitted the winning posters will be presented $96 for first place, $72 for second place, $48 for third place and $24 for fourth place.

Certificates will be awarded to the winning posters, including the honorable mention posters. At least five posters in each grade category will be submitted to the National Statistics Poster Competition, coordinated by the American Statistical Association.
