Student of the Month: Aaryn Mckenzie Gray

The Junior Women’s Civic Club recently named Aaryn Mckenzie Gray, 17, as the September 2013 Girl of the Month. She is the daughter of Bob Gray and Janie Hess-Gray, of Indiana.

Aaryn’s activities at Indiana Area Senior High School include: art, Athena Club, Relay for Life and yearbook. Her awards and accomplishments include: National Honor Society, 2013 homecoming court, high honors, NAACP Scholar/Athlete, and second-place honors in the Pittsburgh Technology Institute (PTI), AutoCAD competition.

Her athletic accomplishments are:

Track — 2013 All-Gazette team; 2013 state javelin finalist, ninth place in Class AAA; Indiana High school record in the javelin; first place, javelin, 2013 Indiana County Meet; seventh place, long jump, 2013 Indiana County Meet; first place, javelin, 2013 Hempfield/Latrobe Invitational; third place, javelin, 2013 West Mifflin Invitational; and three varsity letters.

Volleyball — 2012, first-team all-section honors; 2011, second-team all-section; three varsity letter; state qualifier, 2010, 2012; team co-captain, 2013; and AVIA club team, captain, three years.

Her community and church activities include: Indiana County Head Start, volunteer time and donations; assistant coach with the Indiana Junior High volleyball and track teams; 2011 volunteer, Carter’s Kids Playground; Relay for Life, two years; and Indiana County Family Fun Day, three years. She also participates in services/activities at Grace United Methodist, though not a member.

In her free time, Aaryn likes to read, fish, shop with friends and swim. She spends a lot of time with family and she considers herself lucky to have four grandparents and one great-grandparent, and spends a lot of time with them all.

Aaryn enjoys painting, drawing, photography and making jewelry. She received “Best of Show” at the 2013 Indiana County High School Art competition.

She earns spending and gas money throughout the year by doing odd jobs such as mowing, landscaping, snow removal, house sitting, cleaning, baby-sitting, house painting and jewelry-making.

Aaryn plans to attend a four-year university and major in engineering/architecture.

She is currently being recruited by schools for both volleyball and track.
