Help the Health and Human Services Subcommittee by purchasing tickets for Saturday’s IUP basketball game against Edinboro by using a special code for First Responders Night.

Obtain tickets for $10 each online with the code BLUE, or by contacting Jessica Clark at (724) 463-8200, ext. 13.

HHSS will receive $5 from each ticket sold with the code or through the office.

CONDOLENCES

Our obituaries this week included Julian James “JJ” Altrogge, 95, of Indiana, who passed away Sunday.

JJ was very active in the community, at Sovereign Grace Church, leading Bible studies at nursing homes, and with the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels.

He was also well-known for this hand-painted cards, of which he made thousands for personal birthday gifts. He painted 20 to 30 cards per month for more than 18 years.

According to his obituary, he also “had a great memory and an incredible gift of storytelling.”

YOUR WEEKEND CALENDAR

A Soup and Sandwich Social will be offered by the Clymer UM Women’s group from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church social hall at Fifth and Hancock streets, Clymer.

The event offers homemade soups, sandwiches, desserts and drinks to eat in or take out.

A benefit spaghetti dinner will be offered from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Chevy Chase Community Center to benefit Ray Barrineau, a Rochester Mills resident fighting bone, lung and liver cancer.

And don't forget the Indiana County Democratic Committee’s open meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the UMWA Headquarters, 51 11th St., Lucernemines. SAVE THE DATE

Comedy Night will be offered by The Open Door as a fundraiser, set for 7 p.m. April 5 at the Indiana Area Junior High School auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

With partners Laffs Express and Charter Talent, the event features comedians Charlie Richardson and Jason Dixie.

Women Growing in Faith at Harmony Lutheran Church will offer a Ladies Day Out Tea at 10 a.m. March 29. Guest speaker Michele Huey, author of the Gazette column “God, Me, and a Cup of Tea,” will present “What Kind of Bag Are You?”

Lunch will be provided and door prizes awarded.

PROM PREPARATIONS

Prom gowns and jewelry will be offered for sale at a discount rate March 1 and 2 at the Whitesburg United Methodist Church in Kittanning, where gowns will be $50 each.

Sale hours are noon to 5 p.m.

Private dressing rooms are available, and volunteers will be on hand to help with selection.

This event is a fundraiser for the new ministry “The Celebration of Life.”

In addition, donations of gowns and jewelry will also be accepted both days.
