BILL HASTINGS' INSIDE INDIANA: Holiday shopping, Willow, Alicia, etc.

by on November 29, 2013 11:00 AM

To whom it may concern —

Exit Thanksgiving and enter the holiday shopping season, if you haven’t started already. We’ve already had a white Turkey Day, which is a far cry from the weather we enjoyed last year at this time. Our records indicate today’s high was 48 degrees on this date in 2012, with a warm-up to nearly 60 degrees for the biggest shopping weekend of the year.

In another sign that the holiday season is upon us, the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County is opening up for their “Dickens of a Christmas” open house from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13. Listen to holiday-themed music performances by the Indiana Community Choir and the Sweet Adelines. Join in singing carols by the antique pump organ, played by the society’s own Coralie Hershman and peruse the decorated Clark House, 62 Wayne Ave. in Indiana.

SPEAKING OF shopping, Quota International of Indiana is planning a shopping night Dec. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Indiana, when 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to The Salvation Army. Participating businesses are Lucy Rae’s, Intimately Yours, Michael B’s, Campus Corner and The 700 shop.

PLAY TIME

And, to keep you in the holiday spirit, don’t miss two Christmas-themed productions this month: “A Christmas Carol,” at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Dec. 7 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 on the Waller Hall Mainstage; and “Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13-14 and 20-21 and at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and 22.

The Indiana Lions Club is presenting the Geist Family Comedy Show at the Indiana Junior High School auditorium on Dec. 6. Showtimes are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available.

HIGHEST HONOR

JJ Beck, administrator at the local Loyal Order of the Moose #174, will receive a gold blazer on Saturday that signifies the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member of the Moose.

The formal ceremony will be held Saturday at the local Moose Lodge with dinner and entertainment to follow.

Beck has been a long and faithful member of the local lodge, holding several offices and working diligently wherever he was needed.

He is employed as a member of the press crew at The Indiana Gazette.

A BENEFIT spaghetti dinner for Willow Skye McKinney will be held from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Black Lick Volunteer Fire Hall.

Willow, who was born at only 27 weeks, is the daughter of Amelia “Millie” McKinney and Justin McKinney, of Robinson.

ETC.

Clymer Family Medicine’s walking program has wound down for the year as the weather — and, consequently the conditions of the sidewalks — become more unpredictable. This year’s walkers were led by John Gibson, of Clymer. Look for the program to start up again come spring. … WTAE Weather Watch 4 meteorologists will make a program presentation at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at Shannock Valley Elementary School. Highlights will be on the Channel 4 news at 5 p.m. that day. The presentation includes experiments and weather displays with students.

FROM THE MAIL

Alicia J. Glasser, of Marion Center, was recently sworn into the Pennsylvania Bar as a new attorney. She graduated in May from Widener University’s campus in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Thomas G. Saylor presided over the swearing-in.

SHOP TALK AT SIX

If you’re planning to attend the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce’s annual luncheon on Dec. 6, you have until Saturday to respond. … Gas prices were at the $3.39 mark across the county this morning. … Please read but don’t bet on it: Wisconsin 42, Penn State 21. … Willie, our ex-shoeshine boy, says he heard it elsewhere: If pro is the opposite of con, what is the opposite of progress?

Good evening!
