Ladies Auxiliary Post 1989
The monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary Post 1989 was held Oct. 16.
President Debbie Mock presided. Introduced were District President Sue Di Domenieo and Past Department and District President Peg Rogal. Last month’s minutes and treasurer’s report was given. General order and communication was read. The department president’s special project for 2013-14 is helping the Fisher House, located at the VA Oakland Hospital campus. It is a “home away from home” for families while loved ones are hospitalized without a financial burden.
There were letters sent to all auxiliary members concerning our obligations to cancer and research fund.
Also, the upcoming bake sale will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 15, at the Indiana Mall near Kmart. Any baked goods or a monetary donation will be much appreciated.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. An Octoberfest was held Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the post.
Letters were sent to schools and the local newspaper concerning VOD and PP essay contest and scholarships. The deadline is Friday.
President Mock informed the ladies of the importance of contacting legislators pertaining to veterans’ issues.
The district meeting will be held at the Indiana post on Nov. 10, at 2:30 p.m.
Closing ceremonies were held and the meeting was adjourned. The auxiliary will meet Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., with dinner with comrades.
AARP Evergreen Chapter of #2581 held their monthly meeting at the VFW Country Club.
The invocation was given by Bruce Jenkins.
Members stood to pledge the flag and sing “God Bless America,” led by Dwight Pesceyne.
A moment of silence was held to remember two former members, Denny Edwards and Olive Tartalone, who passed away.
Birthdays for October were recognized. There weren’t any anniversaries.
Membership Chairman Garry McFarland reported there are 200 members. He also announced that due to health reasons, he is giving up this duty. His successor will be Pam George, who has graciously accepted.
Members thanked McFarland for his many years of service to this chapter.
Christmas luncheon tickets are being sold. The luncheon will be at noon on Dec. 17 at the Rustic Lodge in White Township. For more information, call (724) 465-7025.
The meeting at noon on Nov. 19 will be a soup, salad and dessert luncheon followed by the regular meeting at 1 p.m. The program will be the PAPickers. For more information about the luncheon, call (724) 479-8580.
The October programming was provided by Della Jean Manning. She spoke on the veterans homeless shelter called “Tomorrow’s Hope,” located in Craftport. Also, Indiana County Commissioner Rod Ruddock spoke on the plans for a homeless shelter and a clinic for veterans here in Indiana County.
