'CONTEMPORARY FUSION'

by on April 13, 2013 10:50 AM

Wisaal, an Arabic-influenced music ensemble, performed Friday at the Indiana Theater.

Clarinetist Will Cicola, center, is an Indiana native who graduated from Indiana Area High School in 2002. Cicola said the ensemble combines the members’ diverse musical backgrounds — Arabic, Jewish, Indian, American folk and Latin — for “contemporary fusion” pieces and original compositions.

Wisaal recently released its first full-length album, “The Warp and the Weft.” Among those performing with Cicola were Ben Fuhrman, left, on mandolin; and band leader Igor Houwat, on oud, a traditional Arabic instrument.
