Elkin Hi-Tech to lay off 10-15 employees

The production of Elkin Hi-Tech mobile concrete mixers and related equipment will be transferred from Indiana to Indianola, Iowa, this fall, resulting in the loss of 10 to 15 local manufacturing jobs.

Frank Holuta, senior vice president and general manager of Elkin Hi-Tech, said the manufacturing operations will be moved to the Iowa base of the company’s parent firm, Multi-Tech Inc. There it will join two sister companies, International Mobile Mixers and Cemen Tech.

Holuta said the transfer is being made because the Iowa facility is operating under capacity and is a larger, more modern manufacturing plant with overhead cranes and other needed equipment.

Holuta also said Multi-Tech is committed to assisting the 10 to 15 employees who will be displaced in the manufacturing transfer, and the parent firm is working with Pennsylvania CareerLink and the Indiana County Manufacturing Consortium to help those employees.

Holuta is president of the manufacturing consortium.

As part of the transition, Multi-Tech plans to open a new customer support center in Indiana to provide customers on the East Coast with quality service and support. Holuta said the support center will not be in Elkin Hi-Tech’s 35,000 square-foot plant at 2879 Oakland Ave., but in another location near Indiana yet to be determined. The Indiana manufacturing plant will be put up for sale.

Remaining Elkin employees will operate the customer support center, which will have the potential to grow, Holuta said.

According to the company’s website, Elkin Hi-Tech is a world leader in volumetric mixer technology and one of the longest-standing mobile concrete mixer manufacturers in the world. It offers a complete line of custom-built high-tech mobile mixers for mixing fresh concrete from one to 10 cubic yards.

The company also has a line of skid-mounted concrete mixers, silo and concrete batch plants, and tailgate material spreaders.

The company is a founding member of the Volumetric Mixers Manufacturers Bureau.

Production of the Elkin Hi-Tech line of mobile concrete mixers will begin moving to Iowa in October.

Elkin Hi-Tech began 30 years ago in Indiana as Elkin Manufacturing, and is one of several business ventures started by the late Luther Elkin.
