Farmers' market organizers seek new location

Organizers of the Indiana County Farmers’ Market are asking Indiana Borough council for permission to move the Wednesday afternoon version of the popular market this summer to the new IRMC Park along North Seventh Street.

If approved, the market will set up in IRMC Park from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday, June to September.

Organizers pitched that proposal to council’s Community Development Committee Monday evening.

Established in 2009, the farmers’ market is a venue for local vendors only who sell produce, flowers, baked goods, dairy products, meats and crafts.

Chloe Drew, a community volunteer for the market, said it is a proven resource that is expanding to become more of a community market. Organizers want to move the market to the heart of downtown Indiana because it will better support local businesses, create a greater sense of community and provide the space needed as the vendor base increases, she said. At IRMC Park the market’s customers will be closer to more parking spaces and the Water Street Parking Garage, and the market will benefit from the increased pedestrian traffic in the downtown business district, Drew said.

The market in the past has used 16 parking spaces along Eighth Street and the parking lot at the northeast corner of Eighth and Church streets. Drew first asked council last July to consider providing a location with more space for the farm market. She told council last summer that vendors were being turned away on Wednesdays because there was not enough room for everyone who wanted to participate.

According to Drew, the Indiana County Farmers’ Market mission is to enhance the quality of life in Indiana County by providing a community activity that brings farmers and consumers together, enhances business districts and preserves the rich agricultural heritage of Indiana County.
