Gazette wins awards
The Indiana Gazette has won four awards during the Pennsylvania News Media Association’s 2013 Newspaper of the Year contest.
The Gazette won first-place awards in advertising excellence and in the special section and community service/literacy categories. The newspaper earned second place for website presence.
The Gazette’s World War II supplement, documenting stories from local veterans and their survivors, earned the only award given in its circulation category: 20,000 and under. That supplement also garnered first-place awards in two previous contests this year. Just last week, the Gazette produced a similar supplement about the Korean War.
In the community service/literacy category, the paper earned top honors for its annual Newspaper in Education supplement, which showcases the work of thousands of schoolchildren from around Indiana County.
Staffers entered their work in the contest from selected dates between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013.
The overall Newspaper of the Year winner was the Erie Times-News, and the Allentown Morning Call placed second.
The awards will be presented Nov. 8 at the association’s annual convention in Bethlehem.
