Head Start dedicates bench for volunteer
In honor of Edwin “Pappy” Rager, Head Start has dedicated a bench in his honor that will be placed on the playground at the Cherryhill Head Start center in Penn Run.
Rager, who passed away on Sept. 11, had volunteered with Head Start for 20 years. He spent countless hours cutting out and preparing crafts for 90 children every month.
He worked with the children making stepping stones, napkin holders, magnets, lawn ornaments, wooden crafts and much more. All of the materials were supplied and donated by Rager.
Volunteers fondly remember him reading to a group of Head Start children piled high on his lap or pushing children on the swings, even on hot days.
With the bench dedicated to Edwin “Pappy” Rager, from left, are Shannon Lowmaster, lead teacher for Cherryhill Head Start; Sue Snyder, director of Indiana County Head Start; Carrie Rager, his wife; Barb Fridley, his daughter; Michael Rager, his grandson; and Mary Ann Aikens, former Head Start teacher and author of “The Wallet,” a poem dedicated to Rager.
