Hoodlebug Festival takes on competitive flavor

HOMER CITY — The competitive-minded might want to turn their attention to Homer City and its Hoodlebug Summerfest this weekend as there will be a variety of contests during the annual festival.

That’s fitting because the theme for the festival’s 16th version, which takes place Sunday at Homer City Firemen’s Field, is “Off to the Races,” said Sheila Charnego, one of the event’s organizers.

The day begins with a 9:30 a.m. bicycle poker run on the Hoodlebug Trail. Later that afternoon, there will be a 2:45 p.m. hula hoop contest in front of the Summerfest stage, followed by a jitterbug contest an hour later. Also, the Homer-Center Historical Society is again sponsoring its rubber duck race, which starts at 4 p.m. in Floodway Park.

At 4:30 p.m., registration will open for the Hoodlebug 5K Run and Fun Walk. The race, sponsored by the Indiana Road Runners Club, begins at 6 p.m. The race will take place on several Homer City and Center Township roads and the Hoodlebug Trail. Race-day registration is $17.

Shortly after the race starts, a 6:15 p.m. polka contest will get under way. And the day concludes with a food-eating contest. This year, contestants will have to try to eat as much pasta as possible, Charnego said.

Aside from the contests, organizers have planned a variety of other events.

“There should be something for everyone,” Charnego said.

There will be musical entertainment by the bands New Roots, Results May Vary and the Ole 97 Johnny Cash Tribute Band.

The annual Main Street parade begins at 1 p.m., beginning at Wildcat Lane and proceeding to Miller Avenue. A car cruise also begins at 1 p.m.

Free parking will be available at MGK Technologies Inc. along Cooper Avenue. A courtesy parking shuttle will operate from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In addition, Homer-Center Parks and Recreation is discounting admission to the municipal swimming pool during the festival. An all-day pool pass will cost $3. The pool is open from noon to 6 p.m.

Borough police have advised motorists that road closures will be in effect during the festival.

Police said Main Street will close from 1 to 2 p.m. for the parade and again at 5 p.m. for the 5K race. The road will remain closed for the duration of the race.

Police said that those planning to attend the race or the parade should arrive a half-hour ahead of time to avoid traffic delays. Drivers passing through have been asked to avoid the area during those events.

The Hoodlebug Summerfest is sponsored by the Homer City Area Business Association, with support from several local businesses.
