Indiana Borough council Tuesday appointed two borough employees to temporarily handle additional duties while a search continues for a new code and zoning director to succeed David Kirk, who resigned this spring to accept other employment.

Council appointed Brenda Darr as interim building code officer and Otto Peterson as interim zoning officer. Both will be paid an additional $250 per month for the extra duties.

Council Tuesday also accepted the low bid of $239,950 from Ray Winters & Sons Inc., of Indiana, to make infrastructure improvements along the 500 block of School Street in the next phase of the Elm Street Program, a state initiative that revitalizes residential areas near downtown business districts.

In other action council:

• Recognized Susan McClure for her service on the Indiana Borough Planning Commission from 1980 to 2012.

While presenting her with a plaque, councilman Richard Thorell said McClure’s service helped to make Indiana a safe, healthy and prosperous community.

• Agreed to close the 500 block of Philadelphia Street on Sept. 6 and 7 for the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival.

• Voted to make Klondyke Avenue east of Oakland Avenue a no parking and no stopping zone.

• Acknowledged that Indiana has received the “Playful City, USA” designation council sought in March. Councilman John Hartman, council’s representative to the Indiana Area Parks and Recreation board, said the designation will make Indiana eligible to apply for a share of $2.1 million in grants available through KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization that along with its corporate sponsors helps communities build playgrounds.

Hartman said if grant money is received through the program, volunteers will eventually be needed to help make the funded improvements to the borough’s playgrounds.

• Heard Indiana Mayor George Hood proclaim May as “National Bike Month” in the borough.
