IUP lists area students as part of scholars forum

Several area students participated in the Undergraduate Scholars Forum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on April 2.

The eighth annual forum, which showcased original undergraduate research, artwork or performing arts compositions, included works by more than 150 students.

Students applied to be part of the forum and were judged by faculty and administrators on content and the quality of their presentations during the day-long event.

Undergraduate participants from the area:

  • Franklinn Alexander, Ernest, son of Constance and Gerald Alexander and a 2002 graduate of Marion Center High School. An exercise science major, he received the best poster award in the College of Health and Human Services for his work, “Slapshot Speeds and the Variables that Affect Them.” Alexander is a Provost scholar and a dean’s list student.
  • Kathryn Edmondson, Indiana, daughter of Val and Bill Edmondson and a 2008 graduate of Indiana Area High School. An anthropology major, she received an award from IUP’s Environmentally Conscious Organization for her work on “Sustainable Indiana,” a project she collaborated on with six other students.
  • Lindsey R. Grove, Creekside, daughter of Gerald and Diana Grove and a 2008 graduate of Marion Center Area High School. An interdisciplinary fine arts and math education major, she won the best poster award from the College of Fine Arts for her work, “Dance it, Move it, Learn it: Creating an Interdisciplinary Classroom.” A Provost scholar, Grove is a recipient of the Patricia Lommock Dance Theater Scholarship and the Shelly G. Portman Memorial Dance Scholarship at IUP.
  • Camille Kaszubowski, Indiana, daughter of Jill Kaszubowski and a 2009 graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School. A history major, she won the first-place bibliography award for her paper, “Loyalism, Property and Widowhood in Revolutionary Pennsylvania: The Case of Hannah Lewis.”
  • Amy Binion, Indiana, daughter of Tara and Edward Binion and a 2006 graduate of Indiana Senior High School. She presented “Biannual Reproduction of Pennsylvania Stream Fish.”
  • Ryan Cunningham, New Florence, son of Sonya and Richard Quick and a 2009 graduate of Laurel Valley Middle/High School. He presented “Spatial Analysis of Non-point Nutrient Loading in a Watershed.”
  • Nadia Dadson, Indiana, daughter of Ben and Lori Dadson and a 2011 graduate of Indiana Area High School. She presented “Skype versus AT&T” in the business case competition.
  • Michael Hogan, Indiana, a 2010 graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School. He presented “Spatial Distribution of West Nile Virus.”
  • Breeanna Mintmier, Indiana, daughter of Nita and William Mintmier Jr. and a 2009 graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School. She presented “Cellulose Particle Size and Crystallinity Influence Cellulase Kinetics.” She won best poster awards in 2011 and 2013 for IUP’s Women in Science, Mathematics and Technology program.
  • Nicole Dawn Mountain, Clarksburg, daughter of David and Jill Mountain and a 2008 graduate of Saltsburg Junior/Senior High School. She presented “Investigating the Seasons: A New Model in Science Teaching.”
  • LeeAnn New, Arcadia, daughter of Diana and Arnold New and a 2002 graduate of Purchase Line High School. She presented “Ethanol Preference in Sexually Deprived Houseflies” and “Biannual Reproduction in Pennsylvania Stream Fishes.”
  • Michael Perry, Creekside, son of Christina and Richard Perry and a 2010 graduate of Marion Center Area High School. He presented “Spatial Distribution of West Nile Virus.”
  • Emily L. Silvis, Graceton, daughter of Jim and Julie Silvis and a 2009 graduate of Homer-Center High School. She presented “Adaptation After-effects as a Function of Self-reported Autistic-like Traits: A Study of Typically Developing Individuals Whilst Viewing Emotional Faces.”
  • Amanda Wagner, Indiana, daughter of Bill and Barb Wagner and a 2011 graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School. She presented “Skype versus AT&T” in the business case competition.
