K-Kids mark Earth Week and Arbor Day

on May 03, 2014 10:54 AM

In recognition of Earth Week and national Arbor Day, the Horace Mann K-Kids recently spent an afternoon outside their school doing their part for the planet.

The 60 students were joined by 10 parent volunteers, 10 teachers and Principal Jen Helm. They spent part of the afternoon cleaning up litter from the neighborhood surrounding Horace Mann Elementary School and part of the afternoon planting shrubs in the school’s new garden.

Justin Kaskan of Twolick Valley Nursery explained how to properly plant shrubs. Twolick Valley Nursery also donated mulch for the project, which was otherwise funded by a grant from Lowe’s. Dynamic Ceramic installed the retaining wall, and Risinger Landscaping Supplies & Excavating delivered the topsoil.
