SOUTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP - A Smicksburg area man was killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday evening, the Indiana County Coroner's office reported today.
Junior Lee McAninch, 38, of Route 954 Highway North, West Mahoning Township, was killed when he was thrown from his motorcycle while traveling north on State Route 210 in the vicinity of Smyrna Road, coroner Michael Baker reported.
Baker said it appeared that McAninch's motorcycle left the road and slid on loose gravel and sand on the northbound berm, sideswiped the guiderail for some distance and ejected McAninch over the guidrail and into thick underbrush.
Police reported that McAninch traveled about 20 feet on the motorcycle before he was thrown off.
The motorcycle then traveled an additional 255 feet down the guiderail before striking a utility pole and overturning, according to reports.
Baker said a passing motorist reported seeing the motorcycle on the side of the road but could not find the driver, and no other vehicles were reportedly in the area at the time of the accident.
Crews from Plumville Volunteer Fire Department and Citizens' Ambulance Service were called to the scene around 8:48 p.m. and found McAninch after a search of the area.
McAninch was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:30 p.m. as a result of multiple blunt force trauma, Baker reported.
State police reported that McAninch was not wearing a helmet.
No autopsy was conducted.
Toxicology tests are pending, and the wreck is under investigation by state police.
