Forty-one students from the Marion Center Area School District celebrated Arbor Day Friday by participating in a tree-planting project on State Game Lands 174 near Glen Campbell.

The students planted 3,000 evergreen and hardwood seedlings, 100 apple trees and a dozen American chestnuts. The project was a team effort by several agencies and groups.

The students were from high school science teacher Tom Betts’ wildlife ecology classes and the district’s Enviroquest teams sponsored by Betts, high school teacher Howard Cattau and elementary teacher Max Falisec.

Seniors, from left, Hannah Fulton, Reed Hertzler and Jakeb Rising planted one of the back-crossed American chestnut trees.
