Nature program scheduled for Yellow Creek park

on June 19, 2013 10:50 AM

PENN RUN — Several nature programs are planned at Yellow Creek State Park the rest of the month:

• Deer Trail Cameras will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the environmental learning classroom. Park naturalist Mike Shaffer will lead the program. Learn how to use trail cameras to scout for deer and learn about trail camera placement, when to put them out and how to maximize their effectiveness in your hunting area. This is a Friends of the Parks program.

• Sunset Tea Cruise will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. June 29 and leave from the boat rental area (main day-use area).

Come enjoy a relaxing cruise on Yellow Creek Lake, taking in all the sights and sounds that Yellow Creek has to offer. This cruise will take us down to the breast of the dam and back, just in time to watch the sun set behind Chestnut Ridge. If the gentle breezes from the lake don’t cool you off, don’t worry because ice-cold wild teas will be served for your pleasure. The cost is $10 per person. Seating is limited to the first 10 participants. Registration is required. To register, call the park office at (724) 357-7913.

• Stake Church/Herb Garden Tour will be held June 30 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the north shore.

Stake Church was built in the fall of 1883, making it more than 120 years old. It is the oldest operating church on state park land. Come join Shaffer to learn about the fascinating history of this church and the Yellow Creek area.

Then we will venture across the road to the beautiful herb garden to learn how important herbs were to the very survival of early settlers for culinary, medicinal and cleansing purposes.

If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks: (888) PA-PARKS (voice); (717) 558-2710 (local or international voice); or 711 (AT&T Relay Services). With at least three days’ notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
