Was Columbus Italian? Were the people of the Americas “Noble Savages”?

Why did the planting of potatoes cause disasters in China and other parts of Asia?

Why was Poland significant in the development of Europe?

These questions and similar issues will be discussed by Larry Turton in his review of “1491” and “1493,” written by Charles C. Mann, and “1492,” authored by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto.

The period from the mid-1490s to the late 16th century were critical to the growth of the European culture represented by monarchies, colonization and wars.

The review, sponsored by the New Century Club, will be held at the dining hall of St. Andrew’s Village at 9:15 a.m. Jan. 9. The session is open to the public. All proceeds go to the support the holdings of the Indiana Free Library.
