Ox Hill Fair baking contests announced

The Ox Hill Community Agricultural Fair will sponsor three new baking contests this year in conjunction with last year’s Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. Entries will be received between 9 and 11 a.m. Sept. 2. Judging will be on Sept. 3. The Ox Hill Fair runs from Sept. 1 to 7.

The new 2013 PSACF Special Baking Contests are:

• Angel Food Cake Contest. The Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the PSACF, looks for the best cake made from scratch with Pennsylvania eggs. The cakes are judged on flavor, inside characteristics, overall appearance, creativity and topping. Entrants may not have won first place in an angel food cake contest at any other fair this year. The winner will be eligible to enter their cake in the 2014 Pennsylvania Farm Show contest.

• 2013 PA Preferred Chocolate Cake Baking Contest. Contestants are encouraged to use as many Pennsylvania-produced ingredients as possible but must have at least two PA Preferred ingredients in their recipe.

The cakes are judged on flavor, texture, inside characteristics, outside characteristics and frosting. Entrants may not have won first place at any other fair this year.

• 2013 PA Preferred Chocolate Cookie, Brownie Or Bar Baking Contest. This contest is open to any individual ages 8 to 18. Contestants must feature chocolate or cocoa as a main ingredient.

At least two ingredients must be PA Preferred products. Judging criteria consists of flavor, texture, inside characteristics, outside characteristics and creativity.

Winners are eligible for the 2014 PA Farm Show. Contestants may not have taken first place at any other fair this year.

Bakers may only enter one baked item in each contest and all entries must include the entire recipe, including ingredients and detailed directions.

There is no refrigeration at the fair, so entries that require refrigeration after baking must indicate so in the recipe.

Those entries will not be sold, auctioned or otherwise distributed for consumption after judging for food safety reasons.
