PURCHASE LINE — The Purchase Line school directors heard presentations by Deborah Wright, literacy coach, and Dave Hall, math coach, during their regular board meeting Tuesday night.

Wright and Hall will be working with students and teachers to improve scores in both areas.

Wright, a retired teacher from the Apollo-Ridge School District, has developed unique testing strategies and techniques and taught these strategies around the world. She has also written books with a colleague from Penn State. According to Wright, during her time at Apollo-Ridge, the district saw writing scores rise to 92 percent and reading scores increase to 88 percent.

“I’m hoping with these same techniques and strategies that I’m working with Purchase Line that the students here will be able to show some improvement,” she said.

Hall, a retired Penn State-Altoona educator who still teaches part time at St. Francis University, has worked with Purchase Line in past years. Working with math teachers, he helped change the curriculum to make sure the standards of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests are covered in class.

“I’ve spent a majority of my time in the classroom … and I must say it’s been very rewarding,” he said. “You all should be very proud. Your students have been nothing but very respectful of me; the teachers have been as helpful as they can possibly be. I’ve really found it rewarding.”

The services of both Wright and Hall were approved by the board during the Oct. 15 regular meeting. Services were approved at $45 per hour for up to 222 hours, or $10,000 for the 2013-14 school year per coach.

Board member James McMullen announced the selection of Jim Wagner as the executive director of ARIN IU28.

Board member Kevin Smith recognized student Danny Learn’s qualification for the state cross country meet. He finished 147th in the Class A race.

In other business, the board approved:

• The retirement with regret of LuAnne Baker, business office secretary, effective Dec. 3.

• Hiring Jeremy Bracken, Dylan Fetterman and Greg Mahaffey as assistant boys’ basketball coaches at $2,500 each for the 2013-14 school year.

• A furniture purchase for the high school office from The Office Outlet for $8,664.

• The retirement of Vannie Montgomery, eight-hour custodian, effective Jan. 2.

• The transfer of Cheryl Haight, four-hour cafeteria cook to 4 1/2-hour cafeteria cook beginning Nov. 13.
