Saltsburg council fills two seats

SALTSBURG — Two vacant spots were filled on the Saltsburg-Conemaugh Parks and Recreation Board Monday during Saltsburg’s Borough council meeting.

Angela Simpson and Rebecca Kravetsky’s application letters to fill the seats were accepted. Lorrie Johnson had resigned from the board in February.

Councilman Ed Ramsden asked council to purchase Microsoft Windows 7 and other software, including the Microsoft Office Suite, for borough employees. The board approved the request, and will allow the purchase at a price not to exceed $750.

This purchase is required because software used by the police force will no longer be supported by the Windows XP operating system they are using, according to Police Chief Gary Walker. Council also heard at Monday’s meeting that a canal cleanup will be held at 9 a.m. on May 17, weather permitting. This is a volunteer event.

“We’ll be spreading mulch, planting flowers … getting ready for Labor Day and the summer,” said P.J. Hruska, council president. “Everyone is, of course, welcome.”

Councilwoman Kathy Muir reported that the Saltsburg Presbyterian Church has put in a new youth center.

The center will be open on Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. for students in grades seven through 12 and offers different activities such as foosball and pingpong.

“They’re trying to start a nice center that kids can go hang out. … It’s really something positive for the community,” Muir said. “It’s going to be a place for the kids to go on a Friday night to get off the streets.”

She also reported that the Saltsburg Library has started a book club that will meet the last Tuesday of every month.

The library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and hopes to eventually expand its hours to include Wednesday. Volunteers are needed, Muir said.
