Saltsburg's activities set for Saturday
Set for Saturday, Saltsburg’s Light Up night is filled with traditional family activities this year as well as new ones.
The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Canal Park, with the Saltsburg Elementary School chorus kicking off the event singing Christmas carols at 4:30.
The event is put on by the Heritage Holiday Committee.
This year, according to Michelle Jesko, a Heritage Holiday Committee member, about 50 Christmas trees have been purchased for the occasion. Businesses and organizations either decorate the trees they purchase themselves or sponsor a tree for a group such as the Girl Scouts or the elementary school’s classes, she said. Each tree costs $25 and includes lights.
New this year is a ceremony that will be held at 6:30 on the River’s Edge stage.
“We are going to light luminarias in honor of loved ones who have passed on,” Jesko said.
Other annual activities include the chance for kids to visit with Santa and The Grinch, entertainment throughout the evening by Julie Dunmire, who will also emcee the event, and hot chocolate, cookies and crafts at the Lions’ Club building.
“It’s a nice family event,” Jesko said. “Everyone is welcome … it’s a fun time.”
Jesko said that about 400 people attended the event last year.
In case of bad or extremely cold weather, visits with Santa and The Grinch will be moved to the Saltsburg Borough Building on Point Street.
Point Street from the post office to Water Street and also Water Street in front of the river’s edge will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.
