South American group to play at IUP

on April 02, 2013 11:00 AM

The Lively Arts at IUP will present Cimarron, a Latin folk music ensemble, as its next Ovations! series event on Thursday. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

The most accomplished “Llanera” group in Colombia, South America, Cimarron celebrates the sounds of Los Llanos Orientales — a vast plain of cattle country where the descendants of Spanish settlers, African slaves and indigenous Indians live much as their ancestors did, within the lush savannahs that follow the great Orinoco River.

With a sound that has been described as Turbo-flamenco-jazz, Cimarron is “the bull that knows no rope — the steer that roams free, fierce and unbranded at the breach of experiment and trad-ition.”

A seven-piece ensemble led by composer Carlos Rojas, Cimarron uses several authentic instruments indigenous to their region.

They have been performing for more than 20 years in countries like Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Wales, England and the U.S.

Immersed in the festive dance music called joropo, the group presents a fiercely virtuoso display of rippling melodies that produce a rapid and celebratory sound with high-pitched voices reminiscent of the folk tunes of Andalusia, a region in southern Spain.

The fast-paced, triple-meter music is often accompanied by footwork-intense couples dancing and has become an icon of regional and national identity.

Nominated for a 2005 Latin Grammy following the release of its Smithsonian Folkways album “Si Soy Llanero,” Cimarron has also been honored with an acclaimed showcase at the 2008 World Music Expo and the iTunes Rewind Traditional World Album of the Year in 2011.

Tickets for the performance are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building or online now.

Tickets remaining will be sold at the door starting at 7:15 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for regular admission, $16 for senior citizens, and $12 for students and children.
