Stomach of steel: Woman finishes 'Three-Sandwich Challenge'
Guys, look out. When it comes to the Three-Sandwich Challenge at Steel City Samiches on Seventh Street in Indiana, you’ve got some competition.
Steel City Samiches reported Sunday that, for the first time in the challenge’s history, it was completed by a female — Laura Yezchak, 28, of Brush Valley.
The single-person challenge gives contestants an hour to eat three of Steel City’s sandwiches with everything on it — fries, coleslaw and tomato.
According to Kimi Brown, a Steel City employee, the contestant is given full rangeof choosing any of the meats that are served on the sandwiches, including specialty sandwiches.
Yezchak finished the challenge in 36 minutes and 58 seconds, eating the first two sandwiches in only 10 minutes.
“The whole thing came to be because we (Laura and her husband) run a lot and always go after runs to Steel City,” Yezchak said. “I said that I could eat those and my husband said, ‘no you can’t’ … it’s been an ongoing thing for two years.”
For the challenge, Yezchak ate two turkey sandwiches and a tuna sandwich, in that order, “which was a big mistake.”
Tuna, she said, was really hard to eat after the turkey.
“I was surprised how fast I could finish it,” Yezchak said. “My sister and her friend are both pregnant, so I looked like them. It was like a brick was in my stomach.”
According to Gary Lang, the owner of Steel City Samiches, sandwiches range from 500 to 700 calories apiece. That means Yezchak ate between 1,500 and 2,100 calories’ worth of Pittsburgh-style goodness.
