Utility crew works overnight on repairs

Peoples Natural Gas Co. workers spent the night locating a water buildup that blocked the flow of gas in a pipeline along South Fisher Avenue between Washington Street and Oakland Avenue in Indiana.

A broken water pipeline allowed water to build up and leak into the gas line, said Peoples spokesman Barry Kukovich in Pittsburgh.

Service to three houses was interrupted while workers drained water from a low-lying section of pipe overnight, but the gas company will continue exploring the pipe for other possible points where water leaks into the line, Kukovich said.

Temperatures fell to as low as 3 degrees overnight in Indiana, and the excavation crew worked about 13 hours to restore service to customers.   (Tom Peel/Gazette photo)
