New Derry clinches third seed

DERRY — New Derry scored a run in each of the second and third innings and clinched the third seed in the playoffs by outlasting playoff-bound West Lebanon, 2-0, in an Indiana County League baseball game Sunday at New Derry Field.

Steven Tucci ripped an RBI single to score Scott Dixon, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

The following inning, Jordan Hope scored when Cameron Gerhard hit into a double play to give New Derry a 2-0 lead.

New Derry’s Connor Wege fired a six-hitter, struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

West Lebanon’s Matt Rebyanski struck out six, walked two and allowed seven hits.

West Lebanon (8-13-1) locked up the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and plays host to fifth-seeded Apollo in the opening game of the best-of-three quarterfinal-round series Wednesday. New Derry (10-13) faces second-seeded Blairsville in the first game of the best-of-five semifinals Sunday.

Grace I wins softball game

Grace I beat Zion Lutheran, 14-2, in its regular-season finale in Indiana County Church League softball action last week.

Ken Anderson led Grace I with five hits. Doug Karlovich and Matt Gress each stroked four hits, and Jacob Anderson and Bob Rickard each had three. Dennis Snyder, Amanda Anderson and Ed Kormos chipped in two hits apiece.

Tryouts set for travel team

Play Ball Sports of Indiana will hold tryouts for the Indiana County Explosion fast-pitch softball team on Aug. 9 and 10 at Getty Heights Park Field on Rustic Lodge Road.

The U-10 and U-12 age groups will run from 9 to 11 a.m., and the U-14, U-16 and U-18 age divisions will run from noon to 2 p.m.

The tryout fee is $10.
