Henderson finishes in national top 10
DES MOINES, Iowa — Evan Henderson, a Clyde native and sophomore at North Carolina, finished in sixth place in the country at 141 pounds as his NCAA Championships experience came to an end Saturday.
Henderson opened the morning session against a familiar foe in The Citadel’s Ugi Khishignyam, whom Henderson beat in a pair of narrow decisions during the regular season. This time the sixth-seeded Khishignyam pinned Henderson in the opening period at the 1:08 mark, dropping him into the fifth-place match.
He took Cornell’s Michael Nevinger, the 11th seed, in the battle for fifth place, and Nevinger won a 9-2 decision.
The sixth-place finish makes Henderson the first North Carolina wrestler to earn All-America status since Evan Sola earned fifth place at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
