HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Stingers rally past Penns Manor

Marion Center scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to score an 11-9 win over host Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference baseball game Thursday.

Jake Bothell led Marion Center with three singles and two RBIs. Hunter Stiteler singled twice and drove in three runs, Mike Badzik singled twice and drove in a run, and Matt Shank singled and drove in two runs.

Winning pitcher Jeff Labryer struck out one and walked none in two innings of relief.

Gavin Grimaldi singled twice to power Penns Manor.

Grimaldi struck out three and walked three in six innings to suffer the loss.

Marion Center (1-0) plays host to Saltsburg today. Penns Manor (0-2) welcomes Ligonier Valley on Monday.

 

HOMER-CENTER 7, SALTSBURG 2: Homer-Center used timely hitting and a solid pitching from Stephen Novak to topple Saltsburg in a Heritage Conference game at First Commonwealth Field.

Kolby Skultety put the Wildcats ahead for good when he drilled a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 3-1 game. Andrew Gaydosh singled twice to pace Homer-Center.

Novak tossed a four-hitter. He struck out six and walked six.

Losing pitcher Ian Satler struck out six and walked one in five innings.

Both teams play today. Homer-Center plays host to Northern Cambria and Saltsburg travels to Marion Center.

 

PURCHASE LINE 16, HARMONY 8: Purchase Line totaled 14 hits and scored 10 runs in the first inning to roll over visiting Harmony in a non-conference game.

Winning pitcher Darren Bingaman struck out 13 and walked four in six innings of relief. Bingaman also singled three times, scored three times and drove in a run.

Mike Cramer led Purchase Line by going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBIs. Evan Ober singled twice and drove in three runs, and Ethan Koziel singled three times and drove in a run.

Logan Sral went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to pace Harmony (0-1). Austin Young finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Purchase Line (1-1) plays host to Blairsville tonight.

 

ST. JOSEPH 5, APOLLO-RIDGE 4: Apollo-Ridge fell behind by two runs early and then stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings to drop its season opener to host St. Joseph in a WPIAL non-section game.

“This was the first time we go on the field this season and the boys played hard,” first-year Apollo-Ridge coach Joe Rice said. “It definitely stung to lose this one, but at the same time it’s an early-season game and we’re hoping to learn from our mistakes and grow.”

Ryan Ferguson went 2-for-4 to pace Apollo-Ridge. Mike Percic singled and drove in two runs.

Austin Laird struck out five and walked one in a complete-game losing effort.

Apollo-Ridge (0-1) plays host to Leechburg on Monday.

 

DERRY 11, JEANNETTE 5: Derry collected 10 hits and scored each of its 11 runs in the first three innings to coast past Jeannette in a WPIAL non-section game at Grandview Field.

Cameron Gerhard doubled twice and drove in five runs to lead the Trojans. Luke Ridilla went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, Ryan Maloy singled twice and drove in two runs, Dylan Banner doubled and drove in two runs, and Zack Zimmerman doubled and scored three runs.

Joey Kelly struck out two and walked three in 2 1-3 innings to earn the win.

Derry (1-1) plays host to Laurel Highlands on Monday.
