HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Wildcats take two in own tourney
HOMER CITY — Homer-Center scored a pair of victories in the Homer-Center Baseball Classic on Saturday at First Commonwealth Field.
The Wildcats defeated Marion Center, 5-1, and Brookville, 13-9.
Marion Center fell to Richland, 10-0, in its second game, and Richland defeated Brookville, 14-3, in the final game of the day.
Homer-Center’s Alex Arone shut down Marion Center, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in seven innings in the first game.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led throughout. Andrew Gaydosh finished 2-for-4, and Jimmy Bence doubled.
Jake Bothell went 2-for-3 for Marion Center.
Marion Center’s Matt Shank struck out five and walked two in six innings but took the loss.
Anthony Caruso went 3-for-4, and Gaydosh, Darren Carr, Stephen McLoughlin and Bence had two hits each for Homer-Center in a slugfest with Brookville. Gaydosh and Bryan Buzi scored three runs each. Buzi and McLoughlin each cracked doubles.
McLoughlin was the wuinning pitcher, with three strikeouts and seven walks in seven innings.
Caruso and Gaydosh were named to the all-tournament team for Homer-Center.
Shank, Bothell and Travis Gaston earned all-tournament honors for Marion Center.
Homer-Center (5-8) plays host to Ligonier Valley on Tuesday, and Marion Center (5-5) visits Penns Manor on Monday.
