HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: United boys clamp down on defense in win

ARMAGH — Mike Gill recorded a double-double to lead United to a 54-35 win over Blacklick Valley in a non-conference high school boys’ basketball game Saturday.

The Lions played tough defense in the first half, holding the Vikings to just three points in the first quarter and five in the second. Blacklick Valley started throwing up shots in the second half, though, and finished the game with nine 3-point field goals to make the score respectable.

Gill scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Jake Beacker had a game-high 13 points for the Lions.

United (4-6) plays host to Marion Center on Tuesday.

 

CALVARY BAPTIST GIRLS WIN TITLE: Kayla Chambers posted a triple-double, and Calvary Baptist won the title at the Calvary Christian girls’ basketball tournament with a 61-33 over the host team Saturday in the championship game in Huntingdon.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” Calvary Baptist coach Mike Boole said. “They got stronger as the game went on. We only beat (Calvary Christian) by eight in December. They’re a good team.”

Chambers finished with a game-high 26 points, 19 rebounds and 10 steals. She also added five assists. Brittany Prugh scored 16 points for the Patriots, and Megan Plants had 13 points and nine steals.

Chambers and Plants were selected to the all-tournament team.

Dani Mansberger led Calvary Christian with 17 points.

Calvary Baptist (9-2) welcomes Mt. Carmel Christian on Thursday.

 

PATRIOTS FINISH IN THIRD PLACE: Calvary Baptist put up 28 points in the first quarter and stayed strong for a 51-14 win over host Calvary Christian in the third-place game of a boys’ basketball tournament Saturday in Huntingdon.

The Patriots limited Calvary Christian to just four points in the first half, and totaled 21 field goals.

Jerry Zhang scored 13 points and Tyler Chambers added 10 for Calvary Baptist. Joel Knupp, Andy Knupp and Chambers were named to the all-tournament team. Joel Knupp had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Calvary Baptist (8-3) welcomes Mt. Carmel Christian on Thursday.

 

SEEDS OF FAITH REMAINS UNBEATEN: Seeds of Faith stayed undefeated with a 34-25 win over Portersville Christian on Friday in a girls’ basketball game in Portersville.

Hannah Shirley led the Falcons with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Gabby Reese added nine points, seven steals and seven assists.

The Falcons travel to First Baptist on Friday.
