HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Saltsburg, Ligonier win Optimist openers

Saltsburg and Ligonier Valley won preliminary-round games on the opening night of the 45th annual Indiana Optimist Club Underclass Basketball Tournament at Indiana High School on Monday.

Saltsburg topped Penns Manor, 64-46, and Ligonier Valley defeated United, 60-37.

Nick Porter scored 15 points to lead Saltsburg. Frankie Plowman added 13 points, Daniel Shirley had 11, and Noah Zimmerman scored 10.

Penns Manor’s Gavin Grimaldi led all scorers with 18 points.

Jordan Jones paced Ligonier Valley with a game-high 14 points, and Collin Smith added 10.

Matt Dill scored 12 points to lead United.

Ligonier Valley and Saltsburg advanced to the quarterfinals. Ligonier Valley plays Blairsville this evening at 8:15 p.m. Homer-Center and Marion Center open this evening’s action at 7.

Saltsburg plays Indiana at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. West Shamokin and Purchase Line play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The semifinals are set for Thursday, and the championship game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday. Girls’ and boys’ all-star games follow the championship game at 3:30 and 5 p.m, respectively.
