HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: 16 from area to play in Lantzy

JOHNSTOWN — Sixteen football players from the nine Heritage Conference schools will participate in the 43rd annual Ken Lantzy Finest 40 All-Star Game.

The North versus South game is scheduled to be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Johnstown High School’s Trojan Stadium.

The rosters are made up of graduated seniors from high schools in districts 5 and 6.

The North roster includes Blairsville’s Alex Tripodis; Homer-Center’s Levi McCracken and Jared Nealey; Marion Center’s Brodey Thompson; Northern Cambria’s Adam Polites, Nate Zachesky and Alex Atkins; Purchase Line’s Josh Huey; and Penns Manor’s Danny Ferens and Kasey Jewart.

The South squad includes Ligonier Valley’s Ryan Torrance, Hayes Salancy and Michah Tennant; Saltsburg’s Mason Kuntz and Bryce Zimmerman; and United’s Ben Mountan.

Gilgal’s offense leads to win

Gilgal Presbyterian defeated St. Thomas More, 12-5, in an Indiana County Church League softball game Tuesday evening.

Scott Bowman went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and Jason Canose went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, finishing a home run short of the cycle for Gilgal. Bobb Patterson, Ben Harley, Michael Lockhart, Aaron Black and winning pitcher Jeff Cribbs added two hits each.

Tom Barnes went 3-for-4 for St. Thomas More.

• Andrew Piper had three hits, and Chris Hudock and Tim Newell had two apiece to lead Grace II to a 4-0 win over Summit on Tuesday. Nick Artman allowed just two hits and was backed by flawless defense in earning the win.

Trojans fall in PIAA semifinals

PITTSBURGH — For the third time this season, Ambridge beat Derry in a boys’ volleyball match.

But this time the stakes were much higher, and the scores were much closer.

The Bridgers swept Derry by scores of 28-26, 25-19, 25-23 on Tuesday in the PIAA Class AA semifinals at North Allegheny High School. With the win, Ambridge advances to the state finals, where it will take on Northeast at Penn State on Saturday.

Derry led the first game, 24-22, but could not notch the winning point. The Trojans also held a lead in the second game, at 16-15. Matt Vasinko finished with 18 kills, Josh Wannamaker had 10 and Ian Malis added six.

Punxs’y, LV to play in states

Sites and times were announced for the Ligonier Valley softball and Punxsutawney baseball teams’ PIAA quarterfinal-round playoff games.

The Ligonier Valley softball team will play Riverside at Fairhaven Park in McKees Rocks at 4 p.m. on Thursday in a Class AA quarterfinal-round game.

Meanwhile, the Punxsutawney High baseball team will have a much farther trip for their PIAA Class AAA playoff game. The Chucks will travel to Scotland, located near Shippensburg, to face District 1 runner-up Upper Moreland in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 3 p.m.
