HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Blairsville improves to 6-0

Blairsville outhit Ligonier Valley 11-2 and improved to 6-0 by notching a 13-3 win in a Heritage Conference softball game that was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule Monday.

Emilie Okopal fired a two-hitter to get the win. Okopal struck out five and walked six.

Cassidy Edmundson had two hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs to pace the host Bobcats. Abby Peace, Nichole Bendis and Bre McCully each singled twice.

Ligonier Valley’s Kailee Lear struck out five and walked four in a complete-game effort.

Both teams play Wednesday. Blairsville travels to Marion Center, and Ligonier Valley (4-3, 3-2) plays host to Purchase Line.

 

NORTHERN CAMBRIA 16, UNITED 6: Host Northern Cambria scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to coast past United in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Emily Pavelko hit a home run and a triple and drove in five runs to power Northern Cambria.

Winning pitcher Lakyn Fornari struck out one and tossed a two-hitter.

Losing pitcher Hope Hixson struck out one and threw a four-hitter.

Northern Cambria (3-4, 3-3) travels to Purchase Line today, and United plays host to Windber on Thursday.

 

HIGHLANDS 15, INDIANA 3: Highlands collected eight hits and scored three runs in each of the last three innings en route to a win over host Indiana in a WPIAL Section 5-AAA game.

Brianna Dillon singled and doubled to pace the Indians.

Indiana’s Adrian Smith struck out five in a complete-game effort.

Indiana (1-5) plays host to Marion Center today.
