HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Marion Center tops Punxsutawney

Marion Center ace Megan Risinger tossed a four-hitter and belted a home run to power the unbeaten Stingers to a 4-2 win over host Punxsutawney in a non-conference softball game Thursday.

Risinger struck out eight and walked two to improve to 3-0 on the season. She also smacked a two-run homer to spark the Stingers’ three-run rally in the top of the third inning.

Marion Center coach Ed Peterson talked about the significance of beating the Chucks, a solid District 9 Class AAA team.

“This was a big win for our program,” Peterson said. “To go up there and knock off a good Triple-A team that has such a rich history like Punxsutawney just gives us so much momentum going forward.”

Katie Dotts went 3-for-3 to lead the Stingers.

Marion Center (4-0) travels to Penns Manor today, and Punxsutawney plays at Altoona on Saturday.

 

BLAIRSVILLE 15, BLACKLICK VALLEY 0: Blairsville ace Emilie Okopal threw a perfect game, and the unbeaten Bobcats amassed a season-high 15 hits to thump visiting Blacklick Valley in a non-conference game that was shortened to three innings due to the mercy rule.

Okopal struck out six and walked none. She also went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs.

Abrielle Okopal went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a solo homer and three RBIs for Blairsville. Bre McCully singled twice and drove in two runs, Emily Small went 2-for-3, and Nicole Bendis singled and drove in two runs.

Blairsville (5-0) travels to Homer-Center today.

 

KITTANNING 9, INDIANA 5: Indiana allowed a season-high 16 hits and dropped its fourth straight game by falling to host Kittanning in a WPIAL Section 5-AAA game.

Holli Sottile singled twice to pace the Indians.

Losing pitcher Brooke Ruffner struck out one and walked one.

Indiana (1-4) plays host to Burrell today.

 

WEST SHAMOKIN 8, FORD CITY 7: West Shamokin’s Alecia Calhoun pitched a two-hitter, and the Wolves scored eight of the game’s final 10 runs to earn a win over visiting Ford City in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game.

With the score knotted 7-7, the Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game.

Calhoun struck out a career-high 14 and walked seven.

Tristan Cribbs singled twice and drove in three runs to power the Wolves. Leah Baum singled three times, and Haley Buckley doubled and drove in three runs.

West Shamokin (2-2) plays host to Deer Lakes today.

 

FREEPORT 12, APOLLO-RIDGE 1: Host Freeport jumped out to a 9-0 lead and shut down winless Apollo-Ridge in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Adriana Martin smacked three singles to lead Apollo-ridge, and Mariah Laird struck out seven and allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort.

Apollo-Rige (0-6) plays host to Ford City on Tuesday.
