HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Homer-Center's Buzi drives in nine runs in rout

Homer-Center catcher Bryan Buzi belted a grand slam and drove in a career-high nine runs to power the Wildcats to a 19-9 win over Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference baseball game Wednesday at First Commonwealth Field.

The game was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.

Buzi crushed his second grand slam of the season in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wildcats a 17-9 lead. He finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.

“I told Bryan before the game to clear his head and stop thinking. He responded by having one of his best games at the plate,” Homer-Center coach Scott Bauer said.

Ean Lee singled twice, scored four times and drove in a run for Homer-Center. Darren Carr singled twice and drove in a run, Matt Jones had two hits, including a double, and Kolby Skultety also collected two hits.

Austin Fairman struck out eight, walked three and allowed eight hits in a complete-game win. Fairman also singled and drove in two runs.

Kasey Jewart cranked a three-run homer and finished 3-for-4 for Penns Manor. Luke Ruddock hit a three-run homer, and Adam Tomayko had three hits, including a double.

Homer-Center (5-2) travels to Blairsville today. Penns Manor heads to Marion Center on Friday.

 

MARION CENTER 11, UNITED 0: Marion Center totaled 11 hits in just four innings and the Stingers’ pitchers held United to just two hits a mercy-rule-shortened, five-inning home victory in a Heritage Conference game.

Brodey Thompson went 3-for-3, C.J. Stiles had two hits, including a triple, and Garret Glasser added a double for the Stingers.

Thompson drove in three runs, and Stiles, Glasser and Jake Bothell added two RBIs each.

Starter Jared Selkirk struck out two and didn’t issue a walk in two innings for the win. Matt Shank struck out four, also not giving up a walk, in three innings of relief.

Weylon McGeary cracked a double for United.

Tayler Sheriff took the loss, striking out four and walking three in three innings.

Marion Center (3-3) plays host to Penns Manor on Friday. United (1-5) welcomes Saltsburg for a doubleheader today.

 

SALTSBURG 16, PURCHASE LINE 1: Saltsburg wore down Purchase Line’s pitching, picking up steam as the game went on and blowing out the hosts in a Heritage Conference game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Ian Satler went 3-for-3 for Saltsburg, and Mitchel Yard slugged a home run and scored three runs.

Bryce Zimmerman and Doug Pollack added two hits each, Zimmerman and Lucas Mowery totaled three RBIs each, and Adam Deruelle added a double.

Brody Bieda struck out seven and walked two in five innings to earn the win.

Eric Faught went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI to lead the Dragons, and Zack Bartlebaugh doubled and scored.

Darren Bingaman struck out one and walked two in 2 1-3 innings to take the loss.

Both teams play doubleheaders next. Saltsburg (2-3) welcomes United today, and Purchase Line (0-6) visits Northern Cambria on Friday.
