HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Indiana wins seventh straight
With a pitching staff that includes two aces and a lineup that always seems to produce, there’s no telling how far the Indiana High School baseball team will stretch its winning streak.
Danny Clark, one of two aces on the staff, fired a three-hitter, and the Indians ran their winning streak to seven games by blanking host Uniontown, 7-0, in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA game.
Indiana (10-2, 6-1 section), which hasn’t tasted defeat since falling to Hollidaysburg at the Curve Classic on April 5, travels to Laurel Highlands today.
Sean Thompson put Indiana on the board in the top of the first inning when he ripped a two-run double that scored Clark and Bo Putt. Three batters later, Zach Schultz smacked a single to score Thompson and extend Indiana’s lead to 3-0.
The Indians padded their lead to 5-0 by scoring two runs on a hit, a walk and an error in the fourth.
Clark, who has piled up 21 strikeouts and allowed three walks and no runs in his last 12 innings, struck out 11 and walked two.
“Danny has been fabulous this year,” first-year Indiana coach Rob Stossel said. “This was his game. He worked ahead, and he really shut them down, plain and simple. There was never really any pressure on him.”
Thompson and Schultz each finished 2-for-3 to lead Indiana.
HOMER-CENTER 7, SALTSBURG 0: Homer-Center handcuffed host Saltsburg and used offensive bursts in the fifth and seventh innings in a shutout in a Heritage Conference game.
Darren Carr paced Homer-Center by going 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Austin Fairman singled and scored twice.
Winning pitcher Matt Jones tossed a four-hitter, striking out five and walking none. Jones also singled twice and scored a run.
Losing pitcher Brody Bieda struck out five and walked five in four innings.
Both teams play Friday. Homer-Center (6-4) plays host to Northern Cambria, and Saltsburg (6-4) travels to Marion Center.
