H.S. FOOTBALL: Saltsburg 28, Blacklick Valley 14
NANTY GLO — Saltsburg senior Steve Richards amassed a career-high 206 rushing yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a win over Blacklick Valley in a non-conference game Friday.
Despite allowing Richards to run for 168 yards in the first half, the Vikings managed to keep the Trojans off the board.
On Blacklick Valley’s second drive of the third quarter, running back Garrett Smith scored a 4-yard touchdown to put the Vikings ahead 6-0 with 6:33 to play in the quarter. Luke Galko caught a pass from Blake Ray on the ensuing two-point conversion to make it 8-0.
Saltsburg answered on its following drive and marched 72 yards on nine plays to score a touchdown to make it 8-6. Quarterback Frankie Plowman capped the drive by throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Richards. Plowman again hit Richards on the same play on the two-point conversion to tie the game with 2:53 to go in the third quarter.
But the Vikings needed just seven plays to move 66 yards for another touchdown on its next drive. Ray connected with tight end Joe Lesso for an 18-yard touchdown with 15 seconds to go in the third quarter to give Blacklick Valley a 14-8 lead.
Saltsburg once again responded and drove 64 yards on nine plays and scored another touchdown on its ensuing drive. Senior Lucas Mowery scored from 3 yards on a jet sweep around left end to tie the game at 14 with 9:09 to play in the game. Jimmy Beitel then kicked the extra point to give Saltsburg a 15-14 lead, its first of the game.
Richards intercepted a Ray pass on the ensuing drive and returned it 36 yards to the 50. Nine plays later, Richards plowed into the end zone from 8 yards to put the Trojans ahead 22-14 with 39 seconds to play.
River Shindledecker recovered a Vikings fumble on the following drive and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown as time expired.
