HS GOLF: Homer-Center opens in tourney
Penn Cambria wins HC tourney
BURRELL TOWNSHIP — Four area teams competed Sunday and Monday at the Wildcat Invitational high school golf tournament at Chestnut Ridge Resort, hosted by Homer-Center.
Penn Cambria won the 10-team event, which also featured teams from Homer-Center, Blairsville, Northern Cambria and United, with a combined score of 685.
Leechburg’s Matt Barto took medalist honors with a score of 145.
Homer-Center and Northern Cambria fielded two teams apiece. Low scorers for each team were: Logan Dellafiora, Homer-Center I, 166; Joe Capitosti, Homer-Center II, 182; Mark Farrell, Northern Cambria I, 171; Hunter Duriez, Northern Cambria II, 164; Jake Shirley, Blairsville, 175; and A.J. Bono, United, 175.
• Homer-Center opened the season with a 169-187 loss to Conemaugh Township on Friday in a non-conference match at Northfork Golf and Tennis Club.
Homer-Center’s Colin Moore was the medalist with a 37. Logan Dellafiora shot a 44, Andrew Gaydosh carded a 48, and Joe Capitosti finished with a 58.
IHS girls win golf opener
Indiana won its season opener by defeating Kittanning, 217-253, in a WPIAL non-section girls’ golf match Monday at Meadow Lane Golf Course.
Alexa Strong fired a 43 to lead Indiana and earn the medalist honor. Logan Everett posted a 50.
Moran takes pair of games
First-place Moran Financial beat Bowman Coins, 7-6, and then defeated Rae Lyn, 9-8, in a pair of Indiana Over-40 Baseball League games at the White Township Recreation Complex.
In the first game, Joe Pacconi singled twice and drove in two runs to lead Moran Financial (4-0). P.J. McMullen and Jason Magalich each singled twice and drove in a run, and Kevin Geer singled and doubled. Al Baum gave up one hit in three innings to earn the win.
In Game 2, Moran Financial scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull off a come-from-behind win over Rae Lyn.
Baum went 3-for-3 to lead Moran Financial. Pacconi and Jerry Fox each singled twice and drove in a run. McMullen pitched 2 2-3 innings to get the win. Pacconi struck out two of the last three batters to notch the save.
Joe Whitlinger had two singles and two RBIs for Rae Lyn. John Whitlinger singled and drove in two runs.
Derry drops tennis match
Norwin blanked Derry, 5-0, in WPIAL non-section girls’ tennis match Monday.
Derry (0-1) plays at California on Friday.
5K walk slated at Mack Park
The Suicide Task Force of Indiana County will hold the inaugural 5K Walk for a Wonderful Life on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Mack Park grandstand.
Registration opens at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 3 p.m. The fee is $15 for walkers ages 13 and over.
Proceeds benefit the Suicide Task Force of Indiana County’s Community Awareness Programs.

Wiffle ball tourney set Saturday
Shelocta Presbyterian Church will hold a wiffle ball tournament on Saturday at the YMCA of Indiana County.
Teams consist of 6 players, and no running is required. The cost is $10 per player. Players should arrive by 8:30 a.m.
