HS SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Homer-Center beats Colts

Homer-Center racked up 12 hits, including six extra-base hits, and scored the game’s first six runs to breeze to a 12-6 win over Northern Cambria in a Heritage Conference softball game at Floodway Park on Thursday.

Winning pitcher Abby Plowcha tossed a five-hitter, striking out four and walking two. Plowcha also tripled, singled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Claire Sasala led Homer-Center with two doubles, a single, three RBIs and three runs scored. Julia Buggey added a double, a single and an RBI, and Devon Townley tripled and drove in two runs.

Paige Benton tripled to lead Northern Cambria.

Both teams play Saturday. The Wildcats (3-5) play Claysburg-Kimmel in Southern Huntingdon’s tournament, and Northern Cambria (6-6) plays host to Bishop Carroll in the Colt Classic.

 

LIGONIER VALLEY 10, PURCHASE LINE 0: Ligonier Valley’s Hailey Umbaugh and Jackie Berry teamed up to toss a one-hitter, and the Rams cranked out 10 hits to blank host Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Umbaugh struck out nine, walked none and allowed one hit in four innings. Berry allowed no hits in one inning of relief.

Maddy Grimm powered Ligonier Valley with a triple, two singles and three runs scored. Umbaugh doubled, singled and drove in three runs, and Breanne Wallace doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

Purchase Line’s Kyra Smith struck out one and allowed 10 hits in a complete-game effort.

Both teams play today. Ligonier Valley (5-1) plays host to United, and Purchase Line (2-6) welcomes Blairsville.

PENNS MANOR 14, UNITED 1: Host Penns Manor scored six runs in the first inning and outhit United 10-2 to notch a win in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Comets’ Megan McCunn tossed a two-hitter, striking out eight and walking none. McCunn also doubled, singled and scored three times.

Kaylin Templeton singled three times and scored twice for Penns Manor. Mallory Drahnak singled twice and scored twice, and Lindsey Jenkins singled and doubled.

Alyssa Dennison and Leah Magalich each singled for United.

United travels to Ligonier Valley today, and Penns Manor (3-4) plays host to Blairsville on Monday.

 

HIGHLANDS 13, INDIANA 3: Highlands took advantage of Indiana’s short outfield fence and smacked five home runs to coast to a win in a WPIAL Section 5-AAA game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule at the Indiana Little League Complex.

The Rams snapped Indiana’s four-game winning streak. The Indians fell to 6-6 overall and 3-6 in the section.

Cassidy Runyan and Gabby Miller highlighted a pair of six-run rallies for the Rams in the fourth and fifth innings by belting two homers each. Runyan hit a solo homer in the first and then hit three-run shots in the fourth and fifth, and Miller belted two-run shots in the fourth and fifth.

Indiana’s Kaitlyn Palmer hit two home runs.

Indiana welcomes Derry on Monday.

DEER LAKES 23, WEST SHAMOKIN 0: Host Deer Lakes outhit West Shamokin 10-1, and the Lancers plated 12 runs in the third inning en route to a win in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game.

Stephanie Schreckengost smacked West Shamokin’s lone hit, a single.

West Shamokin (4-9, 4-7) travels to Burrell today.
