HS SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: IHS rips winless Derry; Blairsville stays perfect

Indiana outhit winless Derry 12-2 and broke the .500 mark with an 11-0 win over the Trojans in a WPIAL non-section softball game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule Monday at the Indiana Little League Complex.

The Indians led 4-0 before erupting to score seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 11-0 lead. Dana Piper highlighted the rally with a two-run homer. Piper finished 3-for-3.

Winning pitcher Brooke Ruffner fired a two-hitter, striking out five and walking one.

Kaitlyn Palmer and Jayci Drew each doubled twice for Indiana.

Both teams play today. Indiana (7-6) travels to Kittanning, and Derry (0-11) plays host to Mount Pleasant.

 

BLAIRSVILLE 6, PENNS MANOR 2: First-place Blairsville raced to a 5-0 second-inning lead and improved to 8-0 with a win over Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game.

Emilie Okopal struck out 13, walked none and allowed eight hits in a complete-game win.

Shelby Oswald had three hits, including a double, for Blairsville. Mackenzie Livingston and Cassidy Edmundson had two hits apiece.

Kaylin Templeton double twice, singled and drove in two runs to pace Penns Manor. Megan McCunn struck out three and walked one in a complete-game losing effort.

Penns Manor (3-5) plays host to Ligonier Valley today. Blairsville welcomes United on Thursday.

 

LIGONIER VALLEY 9, HOMER-CENTER 1: Ligonier Valley piled up nine hits and generated plenty of run support for ace Hailey Umbaugh to easily secure a win in a Heritage Conference game at Floodway Park.

Homer-Center pitcher Abby Plowcha retired the first seven batters she faced before serving up a towering three-run homer to Ligonier Valley slugger Maddy Grimm in the top of the third inning. Grimm also tripled and drove in four runs.

“That was a shot. She was really the story for them offensively,” Homer-Center coach Randy Thomas said of Grimm, who will attend Kent State University on a softball scholarship in the fall.

Umbaugh fired a two-hitter, fanning 14 and walking two. Brittney Lynch singled twice for the Rams.

Plowcha struck out four, walked two and took the loss.

Homer-Center (3-8) welcomes Purchase Line on Wednesday. Ligonier Valley (7-1) travels to Penns Manor today.

 

PURCHASE LINE 7-7, HARMONY 0-3: Purchase Line surrendered a combined five hits in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Harmony in Westover.

In the first game, Purchase Line outhit Harmony 8-2 and scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Winning pitcher Kyra Smith fired a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking one. Smith also had two RBIs. Tia Adams singled twice and drove in a pair of runs for Purchase Line. Koren McCullough singled twice and drove in a run.

Smith struck out four, walked two and threw a three-hitter in the second game for Purchase Line (4-7).

Adams and Savannah Greene drove in two runs apiece, and Adams added a triple.

Purchase Line (4-7) travels to United today.

 

JEANNETTE 8, APOLLO-RIDGE 2: Host Jeannette mustered just three hits but took advantage of Apollo-Ridge’s five errors and 12 walks to notch a win in a WPIAL non-section game.

Dana Speranza tripled, doubled and drove in a run to pace Apollo-Ridge.

Losing pitcher Mariah Laird struck out two and tossed a three-hitter.

Apollo-Ridge (3-11) plays host to West Shamokin today.
