HS TRACK & FIELD: Indians win meet

GREENSBURG — The Indiana boys’ track and field team opened its season in style, beating Greensburg Salem, 92-58, and Norwin, 93-57, in a WPIAL Section 1-AAA triangular meet Wednesday.

The Indiana girls’ team lost to Norwin, 110-40, and Greensburg Salem, 100-50.

Darnae Clemons paced the boys’ team (2-0) by winning the long jump and the high jump. Clemons also ran on the winning 400 relay team, which included Edu Campos, Chris Caroff and Corey Denlinger. Other first-place finishers for the boys’ team were Austin Rhodes (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles), Campos (100), Denlinger (javelin), Justin Spencer (shot put), Darrious Carter (triple jump), Dakota Harper (pole vault) and Adam Lenze (800). The 3,200 relay team, which consisted of Cole Rosenberger, Ryan Louther, Lenze and Carter, also took first.

Noel Hartle led the girls’ team (0-2) with wins in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Other winners were Jess Hurley (400), Abbey Karcher (high jump), Rachel Mossgrove (discus), Aaryn Gray (javelin) and Natalie DeBar (shot put).


The Purchase Line boys’ team and the United girls’ squad each earned sweeps in a Heritage Conference meet in Armagh. The Purchase Line boys’ team defeated United, 81-63, and Penns Manor, 78-69. United beat Penns Manor, 84-65.

Joe Price led the Purchase Line boys’ team (2-0) with wins in the shot put and the discus. Alec Sunderlin won the 300 hurdles, Josh Huey finished first in the 200, Dalton Patterson took the 110 hurdles, and Grant Syster placed first in the 100.

Jake Beacker won the 400 and the pole vault to pace the United boys’ team (1-1). Beacker also ran on the winning 1,600 relay team, which included Cabot Bisbee, James Currie and Shawn Lichvar.

Other first-place finishers for United were Lichvar (1,600 and 800), Tyler Ofman (high jump) and Charles Hropovich (javelin).

Cody Bytner won the long jump and the triple jump to lead the Penns Manor boys’ team (0-2). J.T. Horwat added a win in the 3,200.

Kennedy Fletcher led the United girls (2-0) by winning all three throwing events, the shot put, the discus and the javelin. Laken Pudliner won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Maggie Slawson added wins in the 400 and the 200, and Hannah Rensko placed first in the 3,200.

Jennifer Knezovich won the long jump, the triple jump and the high jump to pace the Penns Manor girls’ team (1-1). Mary Roach won the 1,600, Devon Bratton took the pole vault, and Caitlyn Bence finished first in the 100.

Melanie Hilliard placed first in the 800 for the Purchase Line girls (0-2).

IHS lacrosse wins

PITTSBURGH — Indiana scored twice in the last minute of play to pull out a 12-11 victory over Vincentian Academy in a WPIAL Division II non-section lacrosse match at J.C. Stone Field on Wednesday.

Keldon Spicher scored the game-tying goal with 38 seconds left, and Ryan Watters scored off an assist from Ted Avolio in the final seconds for the game-winner as Indiana improved to 3-0.

Nick Cornell finished with four goals, Spicher had three, Andrew Wetzel and Watters each scored twice, and Scott Stoudt had one goal.

Sean Rhodes made 14 saves in goal, and Avolio had six ground balls.


Indiana lost the junior varsity game, 5-4. Scott Stoudt scored twice, and Dylan Stapleton and Brandon Dixon each had one goal.

 

IHS tennis loses

LOWER BURRELL — Burrell defeated Indiana, 4-1, in a WPIAL Section 4-AA boys’ tennis match Wednesday.

Justin Fleming won his singles match in straight sets to pace Indiana (0-3). Fleming won, 6-3, 6-1.

LV blanks Dragons

LIGONIER — Ligonier Valley opened its season by racking up 13 hits, including six doubles, and rolling to an easy 9-0 win over Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference softball game Wednesday.

Ligonier Valley, which plated four runs in the first inning, scored two runs on three hits and a walk in the third to extend its lead to 6-0.

Courtney Frappier led Ligonier Valley with two singles, a double and two RBIs. Jeanie Markosky added a single, a double and two RBIs, and Breanne Wallace had a single, a double and an RBI. Hannah Yeskey chipped in a single and a double, and Brittany Lynch doubled.

Hailey Umbaugh tossed a four-hitter, striking out eight and walking three.

Tia Adams doubled to pace Purchase Line.

Losing pitcher Amy Elling struck out five and walked one in five innings.

Both teams play Friday. Ligonier Valley travels to United, and Purchase Line (0-1) heads to Blairsville.
