by The Indiana Gazette on July 17, 2013 10:40 AM

Amfire Mining moved above the .500 mark with a 7-1 win over Greensburg in an Indiana County League baseball game at Keystone Rehab Field on Tuesday.

The Indies were clinging to a one-run advantage when they plated five runs on six hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the game wide open and take a 7-1 lead.

Greg Stewart highlighted the rally with a two-run single.

P.J. Kuta ripped an RBI double, and Aaron Princes had an RBI single.

“We really piled on the runs for insurance so Stewart could just throw strikes and not worry about being too fancy. It was a big inning for us,” Amfire Mining player-manager Ryan Davies said.

Kuta finished 3-for-4, Stewart went 2-for-2, and current IUP shortstop Dylan Songer had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Eddie Gray struck out one and allowed two hits in 2 1-3 innings to earn the win. Stewart struck out three and allowed no hits or runs in two innings of relief.

“Eddie was doing fine when I took him out. I just didn’t want to take any chances,” Davies said. “Greg (Stewart) throws much harder, so I knew the change of speed would be a good thing. He (Stewart) pretty much shut them down the rest of the way.”

Lou Downey struck out four and walked two in a complete-game losing effort for Greensburg.

Both teams play on the road Thursday. Amfire Mining (11-10-1) travels to Trendy Trades and Greensburg (3-21) heads to New Derry.
