ICL ROUNDUP: Blairsville improves to 7-0 with doubleheader sweep
Blairsville continued its early dominance in the Indiana County League and ran its record to 7-0 by sweeping New Derry in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at New Derry Field.
The Colts surrendered a combined seven hits and beat New Derry, 7-5, in Game 1, and 4-1 in Game 2.
“I’ve been involved with the Colts for 12 years and this is the first time we’ve started 7-0,” Blairsville player-manager Joe Culler said.
“It’s been a total team effort. We’ve got different guys coming from different places stepping up. We’ve got guys in high school, college and in the work force. Guys like Scott Harsh are laying concrete and then stepping up after work and contributing.”
Blairsville needed extra innings in the opener of Sunday’s doubleheader to keep its perfect start intact.
With the Colts trailing 5-2 entering the seventh inning, Culler ripped an RBI double in the top of the seventh to trim New Derry’s lead to 5-3.
Three batters later, David Doak delivered a single that scored Matt Johns and Culler and tied the game at 5.
The Colts loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs, and Culler drew a walk to score Jordan Truscott with the eventual game-winning run.
Johns added a sacrifice fly which scored pinch-runner Mike Depanicis and stretched Blairsville’s lead to 7-5.
Culler pitched the last 1 2-3 innings, allowed no hits and earned the win. Culler also finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Starter Frank Wolford struck out nine, walked three and allowed four hits in the first 6 1-3 innings.
Ben Doak singled and drove in two runs for Blairsville, and Harsh singled twice.
Vince Murphy paced New Derry by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tommy Kelly singled and drove in two runs.
Kelly struck out three and walked four in a complete-game losing effort.
In Game 2, Blairsville’s David Doak delivered the only runs Blairsville starter Jordan Truscott needed with a two-run single in the top of the first.
Cory Manarelli led Blairsville with two singles and an RBI.
Truscott struck out six, walked three and allowed one hit in 5 2-3 innings. Culler struck out two, walked none and allowed no hits in 2-3 innings of relief to get the save.
Both teams play today. Blairsville plays host to West Lebanon, and New Derry travels to Trendy Trades.
