IUP FOOTBALL: Crimson Hawks add 11th game to schedule
IUP head coach Curt Cignetti said Tuesday that the Crimson Hawks have found an opponent to play in the opening weekend of the 2014 football season.
The Crimson Hawks will play host to St. Augustine’s, a school from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, on Saturday, Sept. 6, to kick off the season at Frank Cignetti Field.
IUP went 9-2 last season and narrowly missed an NCAA Division II playoff berth. The Falcons went 4-6, but had two close losses, including one in double overtime.
St. Augustine’s, based in Raleigh, N.C., is expecting to return eight of 11 starters on defense, plus its starting quarterback, A.J. Gilford, and tailback, Roderick Davenport.
Cignetti said this is a one-year contract to play St. Augustine’s rather than a home-and-home series. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
With the addition of St. Augustine’s, IUP has a full slate this fall. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference mandates a 10-game schedule, but leaves open the first weekend for teams to find non-conference opponents.
After the season opener, the Crimson Hawks will play road games at Kutztown (Sept. 13), Lock Haven (Sept. 20), Edinboro (Oct. 4), California (Oct. 18) and Gannon (Nov. 8); and home games against Mercyhurst (Sept. 27), Seton Hill (Oct. 11), Slippery Rock (Oct. 25), Clarion (Nov. 1) and West Chester (Nov. 15).
