IUP ROUNDUP: Baseball team drops pair
IUP dropped both ends of a baseball doubleheader to Shippensburg, 5-2 and 3-1, at Harford Community College in Bel Air. Md., on Sunday.
IUP (3-5) scored in the first inning of the opener on Ryan Uhl’s two-run home run, but Shippensburg (7-3) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning on three run-scoring singles.
The Raiders then capitalized on a wild pitch to score a run in the fifth and added a run in the sixth on an RBI double.
IUP put two runners on with two outs in each of the fifth and seventh innings, but a groundout and strikeout ended the threats.
Jared Weed took the loss, giving up four runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings. Deme-trius Christofes allowed two hits and one run in the last 1 1-3 innings.
IUP also opened the scoring in the second game on Uhl’s RBI groundout.
Kyle Zambanini, a senior left-hander, held Shippensburg to two hits in the first three innings, but the Raiders scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.
The Crimson Hawks threatened in the fifth by putting two runners aboard with one out, but Shippensburg forced two straight groundouts.
Zambanini tossed all six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out four.
Dylan Tice was the only IUP player with more than one hit on the day, going 2-for-3 with a three walks and a run scored.
IUP plays East Stroudsburg today in Aberdeen, Md.
LACROSSE: IUP dropped an 18-11 decision to Lindenwood (Mo.) in its season opener at Miller Stadium on Sunday.
Lindenwood (4-1) outscored IUP 12-6 in the second half.
IUP’s Kim Hooven, a freshman from Malvern and Great Valley High School playing in her first collegiate game, scored four goals.
Alex Edwards and Drew Hayden each scored two goals. Sarah Ward, Britt-ney Parlardy and Michelle Zakrzewski scored one goal apiece. Amy Weinberg finished with three assists.
Katie Davis made 10 saves in goal.
IUP plays at Seton Hill on Tuesday.
