IUP ROUNDUP: Crimson Hawks rally, nearly stun top-ranked Shippensburg

IUP stormed back from a three-goal deficit to give top-ranked Shippensburg a scare, but the Crimson Hawks fell short of a major upset and lost to the Red Raiders, 4-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Shippensburg, the No. 1-ranked team in Division II, scored just 62 seconds into the game and had a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Red Raiders stretched their lead to 3-0 with about 21 minutes to play, but the Crimson Hawks fought back, scoring three times in less than eight minutes to forge a tie.

Dani Edwards scored in the 58th minute to open the scoring for IUP, and Chelsea Wanamaker’s goal made it 3-2 in the 63rd minute. And just 3:12 later, Jessica Kida scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year to tie the game at 3 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Shippensburg regrouped and scored in the 68th minute, with just 2:15 left to play, to escape with a victory.

IUP (1-5) lost its fifth straight game. The Crimson Hawks visit West Chester on Friday.

SOCCER: IUP lost to Millersville, 1-0, in overtime in a PSAC game at the South Campus Field. After 90 minutes of scoreless action in regulation, the Marauders capitalized on a rare scoring opportunity early in overtime when Felicia Cramer scored on a scramble in front of the IUP goal in the 94th minute.

IUP held a 14-3 edge in total shots and 7-1 in shots on goal.

IUP (4-3, 3-3 PSAC) visits Mansfield on Friday.

VOLLEYBALL: Fresh off its first two wins of the season in Friday’s action, the IUP women’s volleyball team ran its winning streak to three with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia State on Saturday as the Crimson Hawks wrapped up play at the PSAC/Mountain East Crossover tournament held at Gannon in Erie.

IUP won by scores of 25-15, 14-25, 25-15, 25-21.

Elizabeth Sova (14) and Lisa Kissell (10) led the Crimson Hawks in kills. Setter Carissa Miara led IUP with 36 assists, and Kelly Barnes had a team-high 20 digs.

IUP (3-7) visits Juniata on Tuesday.
